There are many sites to view U.S. Congressional voting results, but most of them reduce lawmakers to a last name, a party and a position. I decided to focus on the Senate and attempt to create a system that would humanize who was doing the voting.
Gathering information primarily from the Senate’s site, I was able to create a simplified portrait of every senator. Each senator’s icon indicates age, race, and gender by the three colors on the left side (top to bottom, respectively), while political affiliation is shown on the right.
The two visualizations below use this system to examine two particular votes. Senators shown above their state’s name voted “Yea”; below is a “Nay.” Senior senators are shown before juniors within each state.
